Title: Compare and Contrast
Author: ElaineMc
Pairing: None really, since it isn't really slash
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Summary: Well, it's a story about Obi-Wan being Anakin's master, while Qui-Gon is alive, and it's rather more fun than canon.
Contact details: I do not have a website or an LJ for this writer, and I have located two email addresses, both of which are fairly old, so I'm not sure how accurate they are:
elaine_mc@hotmail.com

Reasons for recommending:
I'd forgotten how much I liked this story until I went back to reread it. It was one of the very first stories in the fandom that I read ("The Mona Lisa Smile" was the first) - but its really what enjoyment of this genre is all about for me at heart - a love of the characters, of their interaction, of their universe. There is no smut in it, but there is a lot of love, and a great deal of class.

Finding bits to quote is easy - figuring out which one to pick is harder:

Quote from the story:

"Did you ever feel like that? As if you were entirely unqualified for your work?"

"Did I? Let's see... no, not often."

Obi-Wan sighed.

Qui-Gon considered. "Only once or twice a day during the entire time you were my apprentice, I suppose."

Without sitting up again, Obi-Wan turned his head to look at the Master in shock. "Every day?"

"Mm-hmm."

"The entire time?"

"When the Sith... impaled me," Qui-Gon said, thoughtfully, "I remember very clearly my thought on the subject."

"I can't wait to hear this."

"As I faced my death, I thought to myself, 'Oooops. Didn't see that coming.' "

Obi-Wan blinked. Qui-Gon's face was bland.

The younger man snickered, then sobered, horrified. "I'm sorry, Master. It isn't funny--"

"Well, it wasn't at the time," Qui-Gon agreed. "But there's a certain amount of humour in it now."

Go read, and enjoy. And thank you, [livejournal.com profile] darthalia for giving me the chance to recommend so many good fic.

Excellent Choice

I loved re-reading this story. The dialogue and characterization is so natural. ElaineMC was one of the first authors I read, having hit some of the non-slash sights first.
