Coruscant Gothic, by Mystique

reccer's note: [hand-wave] it is Friday, June 18. [hand-wave] Glass Houses didn't miss her turn to recommend something. [hand-wave]. Hey, if it can work for Fox...

Hello campers, TGIF, err TGIS! Your "Gloom, Despair, and Agony on Me" recommendation follows directly. You may commence the Happy Dance.

Title: Coruscant Gothic
Author: Mystique
Rating: R
Pairing: umm...

Warnings: Character death. Dark.

Reasons for recommending: Back in the Golden Days, when we all posted to M-A via carrier pigeon, a few geniuses like RavenD and VelmaDoo and Smitty and Dee came up with the idea of marking the occasion of Halloween with the debut of The Dead Padawan Society. I must say, it warmed my little heart, and I bookmarked the site immediately.

One of the "founding" stories was Coruscant Gothic, which truly creeped me out. Mystique is a Master of setting a mood, and her unique POV in this story is equal parts eerie, scary and vulnerable.

Quote from story: none - I really can't without spoiling it. It's short - go read it now.

Man, this story. I've lost track of the number of times I've read it, and it still upsets me every. Freakin. Time. It's so spare and powerful. I'm glad you rec'd it.

That is one of the ones I always quote to prove that slash can be literature. The sheer style of this one is enough to bowl you over, never mind make you shiver.

This is one of the few Quis that scare me. In a good way.

Cool choice. Very Edgar Alan Poe or Frederic Browne.

The fun thing about this is the way there's never any external explanation (except the title): the set-up is all in the character mono/dialogue, and yet that is built up so wonderfully that the suspension of disbelief never fails. Mystique is such a master of voice: I swear she could write Saruman and his spell would work from the page :) It's not the spookiest TPM story for me, nor my favourite DPS one, but it's great :)

I was hoping you'd tell me :) My very vague memory is that it was one of Pumpkin's; it had a similarity to 'Coruscant Gothic', in that the lover is holding a dead body in his rooms (of someone he probably killed himself), but the lover is Xanatos and the body is Qui-Gon. And it was very creepy indeed. Know which one I mean?

A minor task. You should be done by next year.

And then it will turn out not to be Pumpkin at all :)

That was one of Briony's, I think, but the title escapes me.
